El Concilio Regulador del Tequila en México (CRT) determina lo que puede ser llamado ‘tequila’ en México y los Estados Unidos, y ha emitido una declaración en la que llama a Tesla a adherirse a las reglas para que su producto pueda ser llamado tequila.
En sus declaraciones se opusieron al registro del nombre ‘Teslaquila’, argumentando que la marca “evoca la palabra Tequila… Tequila es una palabra protegida”.

“Si desean que Teslaquila sea registrado como tequila, tendrá que asociarse con un productor tequilero autorizado, cumplir con ciertos estándares y solicitar autorización del Instituto Mexicano de la Propiedad Intelectual (IMPI)”, declaró el CRT.
“De lo contrario, estaría haciendo uso no autorizado de la DOT (Denominación de Origen del Tequila)”, agregaron.
Para poder ser vendido en Estados Unidos, el tequila tiene que ser hecho en ciertos estados de México por un fabricante reconocido y usando una variedad específica de agave azul.
El Twitter de broma de Elon Musk mostró una foto de una botella con una etiqueta donde muestra la “posible aproximación” y también escribió “Teslaquila coming soon…”.
En Octubre, Tesla Inc., trató de registrar ante la Oficina de Patentes y Marcas de Estados Unidos (USPTO) el nombre “Teslaquila” ante la clase 33 Internacional “Licor de agave” o “Destilado de locor de agave azul”.
La firma estadounidense también solicitó registrar la marca “Teslaquila” en México, Jamaica y la Unión Europea.
“No sabemos si Tesla va a hacer tequila, dijo que iba a hacer un destilado y un destilado se puede hacer de cualquier agave y de quién sabe dónde”, dijo el martes Ramón González, director del CRT.
El Consejo Regulador rechaza el uso del nombre Teslaquila incluso si el producto cumple con la denominación de origen para ser un verdadero tequila, porque en el futuro Tesla podría dejar de fabricar tequila y usar la marca Teslaquila para comercializar otros destilados, como mezcal o ron.
“Lo que pasa es que la marca Teslaquila está en grado de confusión (…), podría denominarse Tesla tequila en el momento que se integre a cumplir con toda la normatividad que hay para la productividad del tequila”, explicó González.
Ante el llamado del CRT, un vocero de Tesla dijo que la compañia cubrira los requerimientos y estándares necesarios del Concilio.
Al enterarse de la historia, Elon Musk acudió a su twitter para protestar. “¡Pelearemos Gran Tequila!” escribió.
