Entre 2015 y 2016 la superficie cultivada con amapola en México alcanzó 25 mil 200 hectáreas, mientras que en el siguiente periodo, 2016-2017, se registraron 30 mil 600 hectáreas, lo que significa que el cultivo de amapola aumentó 21 por ciento en el país entre los dos periodos, lo que representa un incremento neto de 5 mil 400 hectáreas, señala un informe del gobierno de México y la Oficina de las Naciones Unidas contra la Droga y el Delito (UNODC por sus siglas en inglés).
Al presentar el informe titulado: “México – Monitoreo de Cultivos de Amapola” que cubre los períodos 2015-2016 y 2016-2017, estimó que la superficie cultivada con amapola en México se basó en la interpretación visual de imágenes satelitales de alta resolución espacial y misiones de verificación de campo terrestres y aéreas, lo que permitió obtener resultados con un alto nivel de precisión.
Se detectaron cultivos de amapola en la Sierra Madre Occidental en los estados de Sinaloa, Chihuahua, Durango y el norte de Nayarit, así como en la Sierra Madre del Sur en los estados de Guerrero y Oaxaca.
Asimismo, se detectó que las principales áreas de cultivos de amapola en el país siguen siendo Guerrero y el denominado “Triángulo Dorado”, la región comprendida entre los estados de Sinaloa, Chihuahua y Durango.
Con datos de la Procuraduría General de la República, se indica que los esfuerzos nacionales de erradicación incrementaron en un 32 por ciento entre 2016 y 2017, de 22,436 hectáreas a 29,692 respectivamente.
El informe fue desarrollado en el marco de un proyecto conjunto denominado “Sistema de Monitoreo de Cultivos Ilícitos en el Territorio Mexicano”. Este proyecto, que goza de financiación del Gobierno de México, recibe el apoyo técnico del Programa de Mundial de Monitoreo de Cultivos Ilícitos de la UNODC en Viena, que permite proporcionar cifras reconocidas a nivel internacional gracias a la aplicación de una metodología transparente, fiable y sólida”, se informó.
El informe indica que una mejor comprensión de los aspectos socioeconómicos, entre otros, asociados a los cultivos ilícitos de amapola en el país, es necesaria para formular políticas que puedan frenar su expansión y fomentar el desarrollo sostenible de alternativas legales.
Antonino De Leo, Representante de la Oficina de Enlace y Partenariado (LPO por sus siglas en inglés) de la UNODC en México, instó a las autoridades nacionales, en coordinación con las estatales y locales, a adoptar nuevos enfoques y estrategias más integrales de control de cultivos.
