El incidente ocurrió la tarde del domingo en la comunidad indígena de Juan de Michis. Una camioneta intentó cruzar un vado a pesar del gran caudal, una acción que otros vehículos habían evitado.
La fuerza del agua fue tal que la corriente arrastró la camioneta río abajo, por lo que de inmediato se solicitó el apoyo de las autoridades para las labores de rescate.
Arturo Galindo Cabada, director estatal de Protección Civil, informó que cuando su equipo llegó al lugar, los habitantes ya habían encontrado los cuerpos de dos menores flotando en el río.
La búsqueda de los padres continuó. A las 10 de la mañana con 45 minutos del lunes, se recuperaron los cuerpos de dos mujeres a más de tres kilómetros del punto del incidente. Sin embargo, los testigos afirman que en la camioneta viajaban más de cinco personas, por lo que la búsqueda de más víctimas continúa.
En el estado, cuatro de las diez presas principales ya están desfogando agua a los ríos. Las presas que actualmente vierten agua son la Santa Elena (en el municipio de Súchil), que está al 101 por ciento de su capacidad.
La presa Peña del Águila (en el municipio de Durango), con el 110 por ciento de su capacidad. La Guadalupe Victoria (también en el municipio de Durango), que está al 94 por ciento. Por último, la Francisco Villa (en el municipio de Poanas), que se encuentra al 96 por ciento.
No se descarta que al menos otras dos presas comiencen a verter agua en las próximas horas: la presa Santiago Bayacora, que está al 95 por ciento de su capacidad, y la presa Caborca (en el municipio de Canatlán), que ya alcanzó el 88 por ciento de llenado.
