Las autoridades brasileñas dijeron que las mujeres embarazadas deben precaverse de besar sobre todo a extraños.
El presidente de la principal institución brasileña de investigaciones médicas dijo que el descubrimiento de virus activos de zika en la saliva significa que las mujeres embarazadas deben tomar precauciones especiales debido al aparente vínculo entre la infección y ciertos defectos congénitos.
Paulo Gadelha sugirió que las mujeres embarazadas eviten besar a personas que no sean sus parejas estables así como compartir cubiertos, vasos y platos con personas que exhiben síntomas del virus.
Los científicos del instituto Fiocruz dicen que están tratando de determinar si existe el contagio entre personas por vía de los fluidos orgánicos.
En tanto, la oficina del Alto Comisionado de la ONU para los Derechos Humanos dijo que las mujeres en los países afectados por el brote de zika —que ha sido vinculado a un aumento de los bebés que nacen con la cabeza anormalmente pequeña — deben tener acceso a métodos de control de la natalidad e incluso el aborto en algunos casos.
La vocera Cecile Pouilly dijo en Ginebra que la oficina pide a los gobiernos de los países latinoamericanos afectados que deroguen leyes que limitan el acceso a los servicios de salud sexual y reproductiva, incluido el aborto.
Pedimos a esos gobiernos que modifiquen esas leyes”, dijo. “¿Cómo pueden pedirles a las mujeres que no se embaracen y a la vez no brindarles la información disponible e incluso de la posibilidad de detener sus embarazos si lo desean?”
Pouilly dijo que una cuarta parte de las mujeres en El Salvador habían sufrido violencia física o sexual el año pasado.
Eso demuestra que muchos de esos embarazos están fuera de su control y es evidente que los países deben tenerlo en cuenta”, dijo. “Lo crucial es que las mujeres puedan decidir y tener la información necesaria para (tomar) decisiones. Las mujeres deben poder abortar si lo desean”.
Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein dijo que el consejo de los gobiernos a las mujeres para que eviten quedar embarazadas “desconoce la realidad” de que muchas mujeres tienen escaso control sobre las circunstancias en las que eso sucede.
Hasta la fecha, el virus transmitido por mosquitos ha llegado a una veintena de países americanos, en algunos de los cuales la violencia sexual es rampante, dijo el alto comisionado para los derechos humanos, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein Al Hussein.
