La fiscal general de Estados Unidos, Pam Bondi, anunció que Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada “morirá en una prisión” de Estados Unidos, anticipando la condena de cadena perpetua que podría recibir en su audiencia de sentencia.
Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada, uno de los líderes históricos del Cártel de Sinaloa, se declaró culpable este 25 de agosto de dos cargos federales en una corte de Nueva York, poniendo fin a más de cuatro décadas en el narcotráfico internacional.
El abogado del capo, Frank Pérez, confirmó a la prensa que su cliente no cooperará con las autoridades estadounidenses en otros casos. “No, para nada” va a dar nombres, señaló.
Bondi calificó la declaración de culpabilidad como “el último éxito del Gobierno de Estados Unidos en su combate contra los mortales cárteles del narcotráfico”, y destacó que el capo pudo operar con impunidad durante años gracias a la supuesta complacencia del Gobierno de México.
Autoridades de EUA buscan a más líderes del narcotráfico
Terrance C. Cole, director de la DEA, aseguró que las autoridades estadounidenses “cazarán a los líderes de estos grupos, destruirán a sus organizaciones, y harán que enfrenten a la justicia”.
Tanto él como la fiscal Pam Bondi declararon que el trabajo contra los cárteles no ha terminado, y que no descansarán hasta que los líderes del narcotráfico sean llevados a prisiones en Estados Unidos.
El juez Brian Cogan advirtió a Zambada que, al declararse culpable, enfrenta la posibilidad de recibir dos cadenas perpetuas. La sentencia final se conocerá en una audiencia programada para el próximo 13 de enero de 2026.
Al declararse culpable, el narcotraficante pierde el derecho a apelar la condena. El Gobierno de EUA valora en 15 mil millones de dólares los bienes que Zambada habría generado con sus actividades ilícitas.
Durante la audiencia, ‘El Mayo’ Zambada leyó una declaración en la que admitió haber sobornado a policías, militares y políticos mexicanos para que el Cártel de Sinaloa operara con impunidad.
“Reconozco el gran daño que las drogas han provocado a Estados Unidos, México y otros lugares. Asumo la responsabilidad y pido perdón a aquellas personas que se hayan visto afectadas por mis acciones”, leyó el capo.
Zambada, de 75 años, también confesó que comenzó a vender mariguana a los 19 años y que fue responsable del tráfico de al menos mil 500 toneladas de cocaína, lo que le generó “cientos de millones de dólares cada año”.
