La agencia espacial rusa Roskosmos anunció un acuerdo con la Administración Nacional de la Aeronáutica y del Espacio (NASA) para cooperar en la construcción de una estación orbital en torno a la Luna en el marco del programa Deep Space Gateway (Portal de Espacio Profundo).
El proyecto apunta a construir una estación en órbita lunar, que sirva como punto de enlace entre la Tierra, la superficie del satélite terrestre y las misiones a otros planetas. Esa estación es considerada punto clave en un programa más ambicioso de vuelos a Marte y el resto del Sistema Solar.
La firma del acuerdo tuvo lugar en Adelaida, Australia, en el 68 Congreso Internacional de Astronáutica.
Los cohetes rusos Angara y Proton-M podrían ser utilizados en paralelo al estadunidense SLS, para “crear la infraestructura de la estación lunar”, según Roskosmos.
La agencia rusa explicó que la creación de esta estación orbital no empezará hasta mediados de 2020.
El espacio es uno de los escasos sectores de cooperación bilateral no afectado por las tensiones entre Estados Unidos y Rusia.
Ambos cooperan en la actual Estación Espacial Internacional, cuyo módulo principal fue fabricado por Rusia, el único país capaz de enviar astronautas desde que se terminó el programa de los transbordadores.
